Harborlight Community Partners Honors Beverly’s Neiland Douglas at its 2013 Celebration of Community Partnerships
On November 8, 2013 over 250 people gathered at Salem’s Hawthorne Hotel for A Celebration of Community Partnerships . Harborlight Community Partners (HCP) assembled local politicians, business leaders, HCP residents, and community supporters to recognize the affordable housing organization’s accomplishments of the past year. HCP also honored Beverly native Neiland J. Douglas, who has spent more than four decades as an affordable housing advocate.
Along with Beverly Mayor William Scanlon, also in attendance were Mayor Elect Michael Cahill, State Representative Jerry Parisella, City Councilor Jason Silva and City Councilor Elect Estelle Rand. Carol Suleski, outgoing President of the Board of Harborlight Community Partners , noted, How wonderful that can we can again gather together not only to recognize the strides made by Harborlight Community Partners in the past year but also to honor Neiland’s life’s work.
Douglas has been a tireless volunteer and civic activist for many causes, none more deeply than the goal of making housing accessible to all. He became involved in housing-related endeavors on the North Shore several years ago, most notably those sponsored by First Baptist Church in Beverly. Drawing on his professional experience which began in New York and Pittsburg in the 1960’s, he began a four-decades long volunteer commitment to provide more affordable housing throughout the North Shore. His commitment is evidenced by the housing offered by Harborlight Community Partners.
The evening also raised over $100,000 for Harborlight Community Partners, thanks to the contributions of several generous businesses, foundations, and individuals including the Ansara Family Fund at The Boston Foundation, Associated Home Care, Boston Private Bank and Trust, Institution for Savings, Mr. and Mrs. Caleb and Bonny Loring, Mr. Caleb Loring Jr., Beverly Rotary, and Rockport Mortgage Company and other sponsors. Andrew DeFranza, Executive Director of Harborlight Community Partners, spoke of both HCP’s successful year and Neiland’s contribution to that success. I am fortunate to work alongside this Board of Directors and commitment community leaders for the benefit of seniors and families in need, DeFranza stated. And I am especially humbled by the experience and compassion that Neiland Douglas has brought to bear on our work.
